The speed of a 56K connection seems to depend on a few different factors: The modem you connect to;  The area of town you are dialing from;  The type and brand of 56K modem that you have; The physical BCTel trunk your connection took to get from your location to ours.  We have found that 56K rates should range between 40K and 50K.  This speed can be tested by going to our File Transfer Test Page and following the directions.

Sometimes good Sometimes not as good
If you find that you are getting a 56K connection rate only half of the time it could be that you are sometimes connecting to a modem on our end that is not compatible with your modems 56K technology.  For example if you connect to our kFlex modem bank but you have an x2 enabled modem.  In this case you would find that your modem functions similar to a 33.6 instead of the 56K you are expecting.
Solution:  Consult with the manufacturer of your modem and upgrade to V.90 as all of our modems support the V.90 standard.  If you are a kFlex customer you can dial the 376-7611 number to guarantee that you don't inadvertently connect to the non-kFlex modem bank.

Modem downloads at a 56K rate but uploads seem slow

The way that the 56K connection works is due to the provider having digital lines.  This allows for the 56K connection but only on a one way street.  Your downloads (receiving data from the Internet) will be at the 56K rate but your uploads (sending data to the Internet) will only be at a rate of approximately 33.6.
